Sperm concentration also called sperm count is sub topic of semen analysis ( spermogram) test. Semen analysis test is a type of laboratory test that is done to diagnose male type infertility and also done to evaluate the success of vasectomy operation which is a kind of birth control method. Semen analysis test also called spermogram or sperm testing evaluates the features of semen fluid and sperm cells.
Semen analysis test topics
- Semen volume
- Semen pH
- Sperm concentration also called sperm count
- Total sperm count
- Semen liquefaction time
- Sperm morphology ( sperm shape)
- Sperm motility ( sperm cell movement ability)
- Semen appearance
- Semen WBC count
Sperm concentration or sperm count means counted sperm cells per milliliter of semen fluid. Total sperm count is found by multiplying sperm concentration value by semen volume mL. Normal sperm concentration is 15 million sperm cells per mL of semen fluid according to WHO ( World Health Organisation).
Lower values of sperm concentration than 15 million sperm cells per semen fluid mL is called oligospermia or oligozoospermia. If the semen analysis test is done to evaluate the success of vasectomy operation, sperm concentration value should be zero. If the semen fluid contains no sperm cells this condition is called azoospermia and sperm concentration value is found zero.
