Sperm health and nutrition – arginine

Infertility is the condition that you and your partner try to have a baby for a year and can’t get pregnant. 50% of the infertility cases are related with sperm health, low sperm count and decreased sperm motility.

Semen volume per ejaculation is between 1mL and 5.6 mL. Each mL of semen contains 40-300 million sperm cells in normal conditions. Lower values than 15 million sperm cells per mL of semen are accepted as low sperm count ( low sperm concentration; sperm cell number per mL of seminal fluid).

Arginine for sperm health

sperm health

Arginine is essential for spermatogenesis ; sperm cell development in testes. Some  studies about arginine show that arginine improves sperm count and sperm concentration after 9 days usage.

It is found that 7-8 weeks of daily 500 mg oral arginine-hcl treatment improved sperm health and sperm motility in most of the patients and healthy pregnancies occured.

Also some type of studies found that arginine has same kind of effects on oligospermia ( low sperm count condition) and pregnancy percentages but if total sperm count is lower than 10 million sperm cells per mL, arginine treatment may not be enough.

Arginine is a type of amino acid, it is a biochemical precursor for spermine, spermidine and putrescine which are natural components and considered as necessary for sperm motility.

L-arginine improves sperm cell’s energy production ability by this way, glycolysis helps sperm cell to increase ATP ( adenosine triphophate- organic chemical that provides energy for living cells) level maximum that sperm cell needs.
