Semen is a thick gelatinous fluid when first ejaculated. This thick form helps semen and sperm cells to stay in the vagina just after ejaculation. Semen fluid starts to transform to a more liquid form after ejaculation to make movement of sperm cells easier. Sperm cells gain motility and start to move to the egg for fertilization by liquefaction of semen.
In normal conditions semen liquefaction time takes around 20 minutes. Semen liqufaction starts after ejaculation and semen becomes more fluid witihin 20-30 minutues. Thick gelatinous semen starts to liquefy by help of enzymes. Semen proteins degrade by help of proteolytic enzymes and semen liquefaction starts.
If semen liquefaction time is longer than 60 minutes this is reported on semen analysis test. Longer semen liquefaction time may be caused by an infection. WBC ( white blood cells) number increase with infection and slow protein eznymes and degradation so semen liquefaction time increases.
