Semen analysis test is done to evaluate your semen fluid. Semen is a thick opaque, whitish gray fluid which contains your sperm cells. Semen fluid protects sperm cells from vaginal environment and provides motility to sperm cells to reach and fertilise the egg.
Semen analysis examines the features of semen fluid and sperm cells like;
- Semen volume
- Semen pH
- Sperm count
- Sperm motility
- Sperm morphology ( sperm shape)
- Semen liquefaction time
- WBC count
Semen pH depends on the balance between seminal vesicle secretion and acidic prostate secretion. Semen pH value means how acidic or basic the semen fluid. Semen pH should be measured at least 30 minutes after liquefaction of semen fluid. Semen pH is affected from CO2 loss so pH should be measured at most 1 hour after ejaculation.Normal semen pH is between 7.2-8 ( according to WHO – World Health Organisation)
Semen pH is important because semen fluid protects your sperm cells from acidic vaginal environment. Normal semen pH is higher than 7. This means normal semen is a basic fluid so it can deactivate the acidic environment and protect your sperm cells.
