Total sperm count is the measured sperm cell number in your whole semen sample. Total sperm count is found by multiplying the semen volume by sperm concentration. Sperm concentration is the measured sperm cells per mL of semen fluid. Sperm count term may be used for sperm concentration in some labs so total sperm count is a different term from sperm concentration or sperm count.
In normal conditions semen sample should contain at least 15 million sperm cells according to WHO ( World Health Organisation). Normal semen volume is accepted at least 1.5 mL. Total sperm count is expected at least 39 million sperm cells in whole semen sample. Total sperm count also sperm concentration may be decreased by some factors. Low sperm count is one of the causes of male type infertility.
Low sperm count is called oligospermia also semen sample may not contain any sperm cells in some cases. Azoospermia is lack of sperm cells in semen fluid which means no sperm cells in semen.
