Semen pH measurement determines the acidity or basicity of semen fluid. Normal semen pH should be between 7.2 and 8 (WHO). Semen is a basic fluid and it protects your sperm cells from the acidic environment of vagina. Normal vaginal pH is between 3.8 and 4.5 this is a acidic environment and may harm your sperm cells but semen is an alkaline fluid and protects your sperm cells. Sperm cells can move through the vagina then reach and fertilize the egg by the help of semen fluid.
Semen fluid provides motility for sperm cells for fertilization and protects them till they reach to the egg.
High semen pH causes
High semen pH means higher values than 8. In normal conditions semen pH should be between 7.2 and 8. There are some causes of high semen pH;
- Infections; infections like acute prostatitis may increase the semen pH and this may affect the sperm motility. Sperm motility is important for sperm cells to reach and fertilize the egg
- Delayed measurement ;Longer semen incubation in laboratory may affect the semen pH. Semen pH should be measured within 1 hour after ejaculation otherwise semen pH value may be affected
- Low semen volume ( hypospermia); normal semen volume is accepted higher than 1.5 mL (WHO). Sometimes higher semen pH may be related with hypospermia
